Food and a drink are not one bucket
A house that runs the same plate every Wednesday still has a food line and, if the table ordered a drink to be consumed there, a different line. The special can feel like one tradition. The receipt cannot. Collapsing both into one income account is how the sales tax return and the alcohol return stop agreeing. The worry on this page is that simple. The night was clear to the people who worked it, and the file made it one number.
Food that is ready to eat belongs on the sales tax return in many states, including food the guest takes to go. A drink consumed on the premises often belongs on its own filing. Alcohol sold for pickup that is not consumed on the premises often leaves that filing and takes sales tax instead. The receipt is where that choice is made, not in a memo written after the month is filed. We read the state form you actually file. We do not borrow another state's percentages.
Should a drink at the table be a rate inside the sales tax center
Usually no. The sales tax center can hold the tax on food. Drinks consumed on the premises are often a separate monthly form, and sometimes two amounts, one the guest sees and one the house remits. Putting alcohol in the center because the software offered a rate is how the two systems drift. The method, added on the check or folded into the price, stays the same from week to week. The percentages live on your state's form, not in a sentence that pretends every state charges the same.
Which account the gift card hits on the day it is sold
A liability. Tax on a restaurant gift card is figured when the guest redeems the card and buys the meal, not when the card is sold. Income on the sale day recognizes money the kitchen has not cooked yet. Redemption moves the liability toward food. If the card and the food share one item, you cannot see that move.
Who runs payday after the tip items exist
The provider you already use. We set up the tips-payable item and, where the house uses one, a separate item for a service charge that is wages rather than a tip. Whether a state also taxes a voluntary tip is that state's rule. A service charge stays out of the tip credit. We do not run the pay, and we do not compute a tip credit on a service charge, because a service charge is wages.
Will a filed period be edited to force a batch to match
No. A closing date is how a filed month stays filed. If a batch is still open inside a locked period, the choice is an amendment or a correction going forward, and that choice is made with the return in view. We do not edit a receipt inside the lock to make a deposit look tidy.
Send the one question that is still yours, with the receipt it belongs to. We answer that one.
Ask where a line sits
One receipt is enough. Name the line you cannot place.
You will be talking to the Steven Palmieri practice.
